not enough money this fall...

WSJ: Apple to sell music videos; iPod video in September?: "Rumors of a video iPod have gained further credence thanks to a report in Monday’s Wall Street Journal [paid sub. req.] that says Apple has recently held discussions with major recording companies about licensing their music videos to sell through the iTunes Music Store.

“The negotiations are a possible prelude to a version of Apple’s hit iPod that would play video, a widely expected gadget that Apple has told some entertainment-industry executives that it could announce by September,” the paper says.

The Journal reports that Apple has approached Warner, EMI, Universal and Sony BMG to license music videos which could go on sale as early as September for $1.99 each. Apple is already bundling music videos with select albums on iTunes.

In addition to the four major music companies, Apple has also had talks with media companies about licensing television shows, “though securing rights to sell television shows over the Internet is highly complex and is likely to take longer than other forms of video,” the paper says."

Form Blazing Sword

Film Article | Reuters.com: "'Voltron: Defender of the Universe' is coming to the big screen.

Producer Mark Gordon ('The Day After Tomorrow') is developing a big-budget feature based on the 1980s giant robot kids TV series and toy sensation.

The 'Voltron' animated TV series debuted in 1984, about the same time as Hasbro's Transformers toy line, igniting a morphing robot phenomenon. According to sources, Voltron has generated $750 million in worldwide licensing and nearly $200 million in toys and merchandising since 1984. The show, in its many incarnations, remains syndicated throughout the world.

The story being developed will be based on the series about five maverick explorer-pilots who must travel to the planet Arus to learn how to operate Voltron, a giant mechanical warrior formed by five smaller robots. The gargantuan robot is the last hope against the evil Drule Empire that has subjugated Earth and taken control of the universe."

business idea

Here's an idea for you. A store that rents out the latest gadgets. Then when the gadgets are a little older and "gently used" sell them. This would appeal to geeks like me that want the latest and greatest but I wouldn't have to pay the full price for that and then once the newness had worn off you could turn it back in and get the latest. Then the rest of the public, normal people, would be able to buy these gadgets for a price that is below market value. A win win for everyone.

ch-ch-changes?

I'm thinking about redoing everything on this site. I really like drupal and would like to move everything from blogger to it, but I don't want to lose all the old stuff. So...I'm thinking about it.

Question:

I'm wanting to do a podcast but I don't really have a subject or know what to do. Here are some options:

1. talking about news items/links that I find interesting
2. some sort of discussion podcast with Rich, Joe, others?
3. something with Laura (don't think she's interested)
4. Sports podcast - nah
5. Movie/music/tv reviews? (probably movie)
6. something geeky?
7. How to do stuff on the computer?

What do you think, any suggestions?

Plan Ahead
The most important factor when recording a Skype-based conversation is to make plans a week in advance with the interviewee. Instruct him or her to:

1. Download Skype from skype.com ;

2. Create an account ;

3. Test it out by calling the echo123 service within Skype.

This process is user-friendly, and Skype generally performs flawlessly.

If there are complications, the Skype website is a great asset. Go to the Skype's forums page to see problems people have reported, with responses from fellow users.

Two days before your interview, record a 5-minute conversation with the interviewee to ensure his or her setup is sufficient for recording. After recording, play the conversation back to ensure that volume levels are satisfactory and that all other wrinkles have been ironed out.

Hardware Matters
Proper hardware must be used in order for the Skype call to be clearly audible on both ends of the conversation. I have found that the most effective way to call people with Skype is by using a headset with a boom microphone. The Audio 60 model from Plantronics works great for me. For more information, follow this link. This headset is fantastic and only costs $20. When buying a headset don't bother spending more than $20-$25.

Some people have on-board microphones on their laptop but using these produce poor-quality podcasts that aren't worth putting on the internet.

Recording the Actual Skype Call
I found many different opinions on software configurations for recording a Skype podcast. There are software packages you can buy and others that are free. I found Audacity worked flawlessly and best of all it is free. To get it to work properly, make sure you can capture the wave-output for recording, not just the microphone. If you set Audacity to record only the microphone, you will only hear your sideof the conversation when recording the podcast.

To record the wave output, right click on the speaker icon (next to your system clock, lower right hand corner) and choose Open Volume Control. Click the Options menu then click properties. Set the Adjust volume to Recording and make sure the Wave-Out Mix is checked. This will open up two sliders; make sure the Select button is checked under Wave-Out Mix, this ensures that Audacity will record the proper signal.

To test the new configuration, open Audacity, hit record, and call echo123 inside Skype. Leave a message and let Skype play it back to you. When the call hangs up, go to Audacity and click stop. Play the clip from the beginning and ensure that Audacity was able to record both ends of the conversation.

A bit of patience and some trial and error will be your best ally. If you need some advice or assistance, please drop me an email at Jason@podcastdude.com"
