To End All Wars
Finished the book To End All Wars Sunday. It was an interesting read. The book is written by a former POW of a Japanese prison camp during World War II. It was quite an eye opener. I did not know much about the Japanese side of the war. All you seem to hear about is the German stuff. The Japanese were truly awful. Very inhumane treatment of their prisoners. What I got out of the story, though, is how the prisoners reacted to their time in the camps. At first they lived by "jungle law" meaning they only looked out for themselves. They became Christians over time and they became obsessed with helping others. If they can help others in their darkest time, why can't I be like that? They visited the sick and wounded. They cared for the weak. They brought food and company to those who had neither. They shared their books that they smuggled in. I can honestly say I do not have that kind of heart right now. I do not look for ways to serve. I have a bad attitude when it comes to helping others if it disrupts my schedule. It is something to ponder.
