ESPN.com - GEN - Chow down: American hot dog eating record set: "Chestnut, a 22-year-old civil engineering student at San Jose State, ate 50 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes Thursday at the Las Vegas qualifier for a spot at the table at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.

The mark sets the American hot dog eating record, beating the 42 hot dogs and buns swallowed by Sonya Thomas last year. In the same competition, Chestnut had only eaten 32.

'I was hoping to do 40,' said Chestnut, the champion in pork ribs (5.5 pounds in 12 minutes), waffles (18.5 in 10 minutes) and jalapeno poppers (118 in 10 minutes). 'I did 48 at home, but it's always harder to do it in front of a crowd.'

Kobayashi, who flies to Coney Island each year from Japan for the hot dog eating championship held July 4, holds the world record of 53? hot dogs and buns. He has won the last five contests, but in two of those victories he ate less than 50 hot dogs and buns.

'This could be so critical to our sport,' said George Shea, chair of the International Federation of Competitive Eating, which sanctions more than 100 eating contests, including the Nathan's event. 'It's never good for the same athlete to win so many years in a row. The Fourth of July has been stolen from Americans because of Kobayashi's dominance and now America has someone who they can get excited about.'"

Today the NCAA Tournament begins. It's the first time in years that I haven't taken this Thursday and Friday off of work. We'll see what my productivity is like today. The NCAA Tourney is a big distraction for many people.

Snowboarder Clark finds a higher power: "After her first run in the women's halfpipe finals, U.S. snowboarder Kelly Clark met with her technical coach, Ricky Bower, to strategize what she needed to do to improve her third-place standing. Bower suggested she throw in a 720 spin for her final trick. Says Bower, 'If she could put in a 720, she'd probably get second.'

But Clark wasn't interested in finishing second. 'Whether I was third or last, I was going for it,' she says. As Christian rock band David Crowder's Oh Praise Him blared through the speakers, Clark soared higher than any of the top 12 riders with a 12-foot frontside air and followed up with two back-to-back 540s.

For her final trick at the end of the chute, she went for a 900 but caught an edge in the landing and fell. Bumped to fourth, Clark was one point shy from completing a U.S. women's sweep. Hannah Teter and Gretchen Bleiler finished first and second, and Norway's Kjersti Buaas took third.

'That was the best run I've ever had,' Clark says. '[The 900 spin] was the best one I've ever done if I had landed it. I'm really pleased with how I rode.'

After Clark, 22, won the Olympics at the Salt Lake Games she struggled with the expectations to consistently perform at the highest level. When reporters asked her at the X Games three years ago what went wrong with her second-place run, she began to sour on the sport. A knee injury the following season kept her off the snow for eight months. During that time, Clark attended a church near her Mammoth Lakes, Calif., condo.

Though she was unable to capitalize on another Olympic medal, Clark takes comfort in her new identity as a Christian. While close friends Teter and Bleiler were stepping up to the medal podium at the bottom of the Bardonecchia halfpipe, Clark stood nearby wiping away tears.

'I love Jesus,' says Clark, who has the name written on her board. '[Being a Christian] is more joyful than all this snowboarding stuff.'"

Finally finished reading Getting Things Done. That was a very needed book. I already feel more productive and I'm not even implementing all of the system. The biggest idea I got from it was the use of Next Actions. That is determining what all of the next actions are for each project that I have on my plate. It's amazing how that frees up a lot of anxiety just by getting all of it out of my head and onto paper. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is unorganized.

Warner agrees to three-year contract with Cardinals - NFL - Yahoo! Sports: "Quarterback Kurt Warner was prepared to sign with another team if the Arizona Cardinals decided he wasn't in their plans after one injury-shortened season. His daughter, Jesse, had a different idea.

'She said, 'Dad, just retire. Just retire so we can stay here,'' Warner said Wednesday.

It never came to that once Warner agreed to an incentive-laden three-year contract that could be worth between $15 million-$22 million. The deal means the Cardinals have their starting quarterback as they head into their new stadium in Glendale next fall. It also means Jesse, a high school freshman, will be able to graduate with her friends.

'She was happy that we got it done so she didn't have to move,' Warner said. 'Had this not worked out here, I don't know what I would have done.'

With Warner on board, the Cardinals will turn their attention to other needs, including upgrading the offensive line and running game. With Warner starting 10 games last year, Arizona had the NFL's most potent passing attack. But the Cardinals' rushing attack finished last.

Warner said he was 'intrigued' by the possibility of reuniting with his former St. Louis coach, Mike Martz, who is the Lions' offensive coordinator. Commanding Martz's high-powered offense in St. Louis, Warner was twice named NFL Most Valuable Player and led the Rams to their only Super Bowl title after the 1999 season.

Warner, who will be 35 when next season kicks off, went 2-8 as a starter last year. He missed the last two games of the 2005 season with a knee injury. He said he's healthy and has been running for the last six weeks.

Warner hasn't played a full season since 2001, but Arizona coach Dennis Green said he isn't concerned about his quarterback's durability.

'I deal in faith and not fear,' Green said. 'I have faith that Kurt Warner will be an outstanding player.'"

Martz, the Detroit Lions' new offensive coordinator, patched up his relationship with Warner after their falling out in St. Louis. And what does Warner think? He's open to the idea of rejoining Martz. They've got a lot of skill guys there (in Detroit), they've got a lot of talent there, similar to what we had in St. Louis. BetaNews: "Maryland is now considering legislation that would ban Internet hunting, a new fad among some enthusiasts of the sport that allows the user to fire a gun remotely at live game. However even avid supporters of the sport are working to have it outlawed.

At least ten states now have laws on the books prohibiting the practice, and Maryland State Senator John Astle, a hunting enthusiast that says Internet hunting 'flies in the face of the hunting ethic,' has put forth legislation in the state to stop the practice there.

Astle, a Democrat representing Maryland's Anne Arundel County, has garnered the support of the Humane Society of the United States, the Safari Club, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and even the National Rifle Association.

At least one Web site has already stopped services due to rule changes. Live-Shot.com stopped service last year after its home state of Texas made the practice illegal.

'Prior to the ban, we proved that with determination, practice, patience and perseverance, a man who thought that he would never have an opportunity to hunt again was able to harvest an animal while bound to his ventilator in his room,' the Web site said of the new law.

Some say the ban needs to be worded so those who are disabled may still use computers to assist in hunting live game.

'We would never want to eliminate future technologies that would allow someone, disabled or otherwise, to participate in hunting in the field,' Maryland Department of Natural Resources director Paul Peditto told the Associated Press on Monday."

Our documentary of the week was Home Movie. Highly recommended. It shows 5 different houses and their eccentric owners. I think the cat people were the best. The woman said she only had two goals in life. One was to be a girl scout, but when she was a brownie someone told her that to become a girl scout she would have to fly up. Since she didn't know how to do that, that was out. So her next goal was to become a teenager. Once she reached teenage, she retired. I still don't know what that means. I'm not sure I could've lived in any of those places. I guess the missile silo was probably the closest to something I would have wanted. The electric house was kind of cool, but too ugly.

Speaking hours before the premiere of a fifth edition of 'American Idol,' the No. 1 U.S. TV show last season, Fox Entertainment President Peter Liguori voiced disappointment that 'Arrested Development' was headed for the chopping block.

'It's highly unlikely the show is coming back, but no definitive final answer has been made on that,' Liguori told a gathering of TV critics in Pasadena. 'It's regrettable we couldn't find an audience that the show deserves.'

A spokesman for the network's sister studio, 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the show, said two other networks -- ABC and Showtime -- had approached producers with bids to carry the series next year.

'We are currently considering the offers on the table,' the spokesman, Chris Alexander, told Reuters.

Added Liguori: 'It ('Arrested Development') is a studio property, and there is interest at other networks. It's the studio's right and (the executive producer's) right to put that up to bid.'

He suggested that 'Arrested Development' might be an especially good fit for premium cable channel Showtime, where the comedy's current average audience of just over 4 million viewers would rank it as a major hit.

'From a numbers standpoint, if Showtime were able to migrate the numbers 'Arrested' gets on Fox to Showtime, that would be by far its No. 1 show,' he said.

The quirky comedy about a dysfunctional family has been a critical favorite since its launch in 2003, but has continued to flounder in ratings. A two-hour season finale, which is expected to be the show's swan song, is slated to air February 10."

Old Chicago is reporting record breaking business. Since its opening last year, business hasn't slowed down, and there's usually a 30 minute wait every night.

And established restaurants, like Lone Star, say business remains good despite the growing competition.

So, how long can this last?

Old Chicago's general manager, Jimmy Fagnant, replies, 'I think it's all going to depend on how fast Evansville grows. If the population stays the same, then obviously restaurants are going to quit coming in. But as long as Evansville keeps growing, as long as the economics are good, people will keep coming.'

It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity.

In other words, it's OK to flame someone on a mailing list or in a blog as long as you do it under your real name. Thank Congress for small favors, I guess."

Here's the relevant language.

"Whoever...utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet... without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person...who receives the communications...shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."

"To grease the rails for this idea, Sen. Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican, and the section's other sponsors slipped it into an unrelated, must-pass bill to fund the Department of Justice. The plan: to make it politically infeasible for politicians to oppose the measure.

The tactic worked. The bill cleared the House of Representatives by voice vote, and the Senate unanimously approved it Dec. 16.

There's an interesting side note. An earlier version that the House approved in September had radically different wording. It was reasonable by comparison, and criminalized only using an "interactive computer service" to cause someone "substantial emotional harm."

That kind of prohibition might make sense. But why should merely annoying someone be illegal? "

The Rev. David Niednagel is among Evansville's most popular and charismatic pastors. Now, his plain-spoken messages are finding new ears outside the walls of Christian Fellowship Church. The listeners aren't in pews. They're online, and they're not alone.

Nationwide, an estimated 4.5 million people this year used their digital music players - the most popular of which is Apple's iPod - to listen to spoken-word programs from sources such as ABC News or ESPN. Podcasting, as it is known, has become so popular it even earned itself an entry this year in the dictionary.

But Niednagel is part of the fast-growing niche known as Godcasting, which makes available downloadable messages from Christians, Jews, Mormons and even pagans. There, between Depeche Mode's 'Personal Jesus' and Kanye West's 'Jesus Walks,' Sunday's messages are available for download. An average of 488 people download Christian Fellowship Church's service, said Steve Gubbins, technical ministries director. 'Some of it is people from other churches who want to hear what David (Niednagel) has to say. We have a lot of listeners from around the world,' Gubbins said. 'It expands the reach of the church (to) shut-ins, people who can't get here. It allows them to stay connected and share with us.'

And the number is growing.

According to industry analyst The Diffusion Group, the 800,000 consumers who used podcasting in 2004 is expected to reach 56.8 million people in 2010.

In other words: The number will double each year through the end of this decade.

Right now, about 15 percent of those who have digital music devices use them for podcasting. That rate is expected to reach 75 percent by 2010.

Podcasting could represent the single largest increase in religious exposure since television, which gave rise to the televangelist. The on-demand audio has the potential to reach an even greater share of the population while spending very little on production costs. In many cases, the audio already is recorded. It just has to be converted into a digital file and made available online."

No signs of foul play: "There were no immediate signs of foul play in the death of a World Wrestling Entertainment star whose body was found in a Minneapolis hotel room, authorities said.

An autopsy to determine how 38-year-old Eduardo Gory Guerrero died was planned for Monday. On its Web site, the Stamford, Conn.-based WWE said Guerrero's body will then be flown to Phoenix and funeral arrangements are set for Wednesday in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Guerrero, a featured star on the UPN show 'WWE Smackdown!', was in Minneapolis for a Sunday night WWE show at Target Center.

Authorities said Guerrero didn't respond to a wake-up call Sunday morning. His nephew, fellow WWE wrestler Chavo Guerrero, and hotel security at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center forced their way into the room and found the 5-foot-8, 220-pound wrestler on the floor. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

His nephew said Guerrero was open about past drug and alcohol abuse but had been sober for four years. Guerrero was married and had three children."
